Journalist and diplomat. After finishing school, Lambsdorff studied law, political science and journalism. In 1974 he moved to the Foreign Service. After positions as head of the cultural department in the Moscow embassy and as economic envoy at the embassy in Washington, D.C., he became the first ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Latvia in 1991 in Riga.

.From 1999 to 2001 German ambassador in Prague was in the Czech Republic. In the meantime, he also always took over internal tasks in the Federal Foreign Office and was head of the foreign department of the Federal Press Office.
