He joined ZEIT from the Henri Nannen School in 1983. In 1984, together with four other graduates of the Henri Nannen School, Naß was co-author of the journalist Wolf Schneider's book Unsere täglich Desinformation - Wie die Massenmedien uns in der Irre führen (Our Daily Disinformation - How the Mass Media Leads Us Astray), in which the processes of everyday editorial work in German newspapers, including their gatekeepers, are presented.

Naß began his career as an editor in politics. In 1990 he became deputy head of the political editorial department, and from 1994 to 1997 he was editor-in-chief. From 1998 to 2010, Naß was deputy editor-in-chief. He has been an international correspondent since 1 January 2011. He is also co-founder and scientific director of the ZEIT Akademie.

From 1978 to 1982 he was managing director of the German Society for Asian Studies and editor of the journal Asien. Matthias Naß is Vice President of the German-Japanese Center Berlin.
