He joined Mitsui Bank in 1969. After assuming various managerial positions in the bank, he was appointed General Representative in Thailand and General Manager of Bangkok Branch, Sakura Bank (Sakura Bank was formed in April 1990 through the merger of Mitsui Bank and Taiyo Kobe Bank). He returned to Japan in 1997 and was appointed Director and General Manager of Planning Division.
In 1999, Mr. Kitayama was appointed Secretary General of the Integration Strategy Committee of Sakura Bank, leading its merger with Sumitomo Bank to form Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) in April 2001. In 2004, he became Deputy President and Member of the Board of Directors of Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, Inc. (SMFG) and in 2005, he was appointed President of SMFG and Chairman of the Board of SMBC.
