Political scientist and political consultant. From 1987 to 1999, he was the Federal Government Coordinator for German-American Cooperation. From 1975 to 1995, he was Professor of Political Science at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz. Between 1986 and 1988, he was an associate professor at the Sorbonne in Paris. From 1987 to 1999, he was the Federal Government Coordinator for German-American Cooperation. In 1994 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by Middlebury (Vermont).
Since 1995 he has held the chair for Political Systems and European Unification at the Geschwister-Scholl-Institute for Political Science at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich and was Director of the Centre for Applied Policy Research (CAP). Since 2000 he has also been a permanent visiting professor at the Chinese People's University in Beijing. Werner Weidenfeld was emeritus in the summer semester 2013, Klaus H. Goetz from the University of Potsdam was appointed as his successor.
