Foreign Service. He worked in Singapore and Beijing, among other places, as a speechwriter for Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker, as a political officer at the German Embassy in Moscow and as a member of the planning staff of the Foreign Office. In 1995 he became head of the basic department in the disarmament department and in 1998 European correspondent (expanded in 1999 to include security and defence policy).
In 2001 he moved to the Federal Intelligence Service as Vice President. From 2004 to 2008 he was President of the Federal Academy for Security Policy. He was envoy to Moscow in 2008 and to London in 2011. In 2013/14 he was the Chargé d'Affaires of the German Embassy in London. He then retired.
He is an external lecturer at the Zentralinstitut studium plus the Universität der Bundeswehr Munich and lives in Prien am Chiemsee.
