Was a graduate of Town School for Boys, Lick-Wilmerding High School, and Stanford University. He also received a Doctor of Philosophy from Oxford University. He taught at Pitzer College and the Claremont Graduate School, then began and ran the study abroad programs at Pomona College. In the early 80's he moved back to San Francisco and became the West Coast Director of the Institute of International Education until his retirement.
