Was the Governor of the Bank of Japan from 2008-2013, and as such shaped the monetary policy of the world’s third largest economy during the global financial crisis. From 2011-2013 he was also Director and Vice-Chairman at the Bank of International Settlements. He currently serves as Senior Advisor and member of the Global Advisory Board at Promontory Financial Group. In addition, he is a Special Professor of International Politics, Economics and Communication at Aoyama Gakuin University. Mr. Shirakawa is a member of the “Group of 30,” a private non-profit organization that aims to deepen our understanding of international economic and financial issues. Mr. Shirakawa graduated from The University of Tokyo with a bachelor of arts in economics, and he holds an M.A. in Economics from the University of Chicago. He joined the Bank of Japan in 1972.
