After graduation he entered the Middle class in the General Theological Seminary of the Protestant Episcopal Church in New York City and studied there two years. He was ordained Deacon July 9, 1843, in Christ Church, Philadelphia, and was in charge of Christ Church, Williamsport, Pa., six months. The following April he was chosen rector of St. Mary's Church, then in Hamilton Village, a suburb of West Philadelphia, but now within the city of Philadelphia. With this parish he remained the rest of his long life. May 19, 1844 he was ordained Priest by Bishop Onderdonk.
