He is an Italian economist, appointed governor of the Bank of Italy in 1993, when the office was for life, he was forced to resign in 2005 because of an investigation that involved him, as a result of which the mandate was reduced to 6 years renewable once.

Since 1962 he has been attending courses in macroeconomics and theory of economic and monetary development at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, under the guidance of Nobel Prize winner Franco Modigliani.

In 1963, he returned to the Bank of Italy as an expert at the econometric research office, where he collaborated to develop the first econometric model (M1BI). In 1966 he was appointed to his post.
