Journalist. Became a contributing opinion writer for The International New York Times in the fall of 2013. Ms. Kauffmann is editorial director and a columnist at the French newspaper Le Monde. She was previously its editor in chief, in 2010-11.
Ms. Kauffmann joined Le Monde in 1987 as a Moscow correspondent, during the Gorbachev years. From 1988 to 1993, as the correspondent for Eastern and Central Europe, she covered the collapse of the Soviet bloc and the transition of Europe’s new democracies to a market economy. She then moved to the United States, first as Washington correspondent and then, from 1996 to 2001, as New York bureau chief.
Before joining Le Monde, Ms. Kauffmann worked for Agence France-Presse as a foreign correspondent in London, New Caledonia (a French territory in the South Pacific), Warsaw and finally Moscow.
