British peer and Labour politician was a member of the House of Lords from 23 January 1989. He had inherited his father's title and seat through his father's death.
From 1964 to 1966 he was a manager at Amalgamated Packaging Industries Ltd. in Rhodesia. From 1971 to 1974 he was Director of the private bank Coutts & Co. In 1976, after legal training with the British barrister, politician and writer Peter Rawlinson, he was admitted as a lawyer to the London Bar Association Inner Temple and practiced as a barrister for four years from 1977 to 1981. From 1981 to 1985, he was Senior Law Officer of the Ministry of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs of Zimbabwe.
