After the end of the war he began a military career in 1945. After Close worked as a military attaché in London on behalf of Belgium, he headed the Belgian General Brigades in the Federal Republic of Germany from 1971 to 1974. He then worked for the NATO Defence Committee in Rome until 1976. After writing the book L'Europe'sans défense in 1976, in which he expressed a negative opinion on NATO, he was dismissed from the NATO Defence Committee.

After leaving the Belgian army in 1980, he became politically active for the PRL and from 1981 to 1987 was a member of the Belgian Senate for this party: from 1981 to 1985 as directly elected Senator for the Brussels district and from 1985 to 1987 as Provincial Senator for Brabant.
