He was a full professor of Political Sociology at the University of Bayreuth and headed the American Research Unit there. He is also Chairman of the Council on Public Policy. He has also worked at the University of Notre Dame, the University of Chicago, Stanford University, the International Center of Economic Research in Turin and the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C..
.He is currently a lecturer at the Munich School of Political Science and a visiting professor at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. His research interests include political economy, the history of ideas, sociology of religion, and the United States. He has published several books and articles, among others in the Dictionary of Sociology (keyword Political Sociology) and in the Classics of Political Thought (keyword Max Weber).
From 1971 to 1976, he was chairman of the Federal Freedom of Science. He was treasurer of the conservative association from 1978 to 1988. In 1974 he became a member of the German Education Council. Zöller is a board member of the Mont Pelerin Society.
