From July 2007 to June 2008, Ministerial Director Ammon was Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to France. During this time, according to research by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, he is said to have opened black money accounts in order to be able to channel funds past the social security system.

On 2 August 2008 Peter Ammon was appointed State Secretary of the Federal Foreign Office (StS-A) by Foreign Minister Steinmeier, succeeding Georg Boomgaarden.
