He served as a member of the United States Marine Corps Reserve from 1959 to 1963. General Byron graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Latin American Studies from the University of Miami in 1963 and was commissioned in the United States Marine Corps that same year.

General Byron, an infantry officer, has held a wide variety of command and staff positions during his military career. He has served in various Marine Corps command positions ranging from company commander to division commander (3rd Mar Div) in both the Atlantic and Pacific theatres of operation. General Byron was also Commanding General, 3d Marine Expeditionary Force. He served in Vietnam as a unit commander in the Third Marine Division and as an advisor to RVN operational units.

He staff position include duties as a regimental, division, and service headquarters staff officer as well as joint duty with US Military Advisory Groups, the Joint Staff, the Office of the Secretary of Defense and the US Atlantic Command. Key positions include service as Director, InterAmerican Region (International Security Affairs), Office of the Secretary of Defense. The Assistant to the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, Office of the Secretary of Defense, and Director for Plans and Policy (J-5) for the United States Atlantic Command.

General Byron served as Vice Director for Strategic Plans and Policy (J-5), the Joint Staff, prior to assuming his current duties as U.S. Military Representative to the NATO Military Committee.
