He studied law and settled in New York City, at the same time giving much attention to botany and othe r more general studies. In consequence of severe professional labor his health failed, and his mind became to some extent disordered. He sought relief by a visit to Florida for botanical excursions. In April, 1856, he returned wi thout much benefit, and in a paroxysm of his malady took hi sown life, in New York City, on May 5, in his 39th year.
