He entered the Law School of Harvard University in February, 1841, and received the degree of LL.B. in 1843. He was admitted later in the same year to the bar in Natchez, where he entered into practice, and became very wealthy. During the Civil War he was Colonel of a Confederate regiment raised in Natchez and was killed in the battle of Stone River, Tennessee, on December 31, 1862, in his 43d year.
