He studied law in Boston until 1844, and then taught for two years in the Female Academy in Augusta, Maine. He was admitted to the bar in August, 1846. He began the practice of his profession in Boston in 1846, and was married on August 30, 1848, to Mary Sawtelle, younger daughter of Judge Daniel and Mary (Sawtelle) Williams, of Augusta. In 1850 he removed to Augusta, where he continued in active practice until his death, after a brief and distressing illness, on May 7, 1855, in his 34th year.
