Before entering College he served for three years and a half (from August, 1861) as a lieutenant in the 2d Regiment of Artillery, U S. Army.

He taught after graduation for a year in Gen. Russel's school in New Haven, remained for another year in the city engaged in private instruction, and then entered on a tutorship in mathematics in the College, which he held for two years. He then went to his parents' home in Covington, Ky , and after a brief period of study was admitted to the Kentucky bar in May, 1874. In the ensuing September he came to New York City, and after his admission to the bar there, practiced his profession until his death.

He died at his residence in Ridgefield, N. J., January 12,1884, at the age of 41. He was born in Cincinnati, September 29, 1842.
