In 1981, Johnson co-founded Public Strategies, a private consulting firm, with diplomat Richard Holbrooke. He headed the firm until 1985. During that time, he was also the campaign manager for Walter Mondale's failed 1984 presidential bid. Managing director with Lehman Brothers (1985-1990).
In 1990, Johnson became vice chairman of Fannie Mae, or the Federal National Mortgage Association, a quasi-public organization that guarantees mortgages for millions of American homeowners. In 1991, he was appointed chairman and chief executive officer of Fannie Mae.
Since 2001, Johnson has been vice chairman of the private banking firm Perseus LLC. Johnson has been a board member of Goldman Sachs, Gannett Company, Inc., KB Home, Target Corporation, Temple-Inland, and a former director of UnitedHealth Group.
He is also Chairman, Johnson Capital Partners, a private consulting company.
