Diplomat and political consultant. He was President of the Richard Lounsbery Foundation, previously political advisor to US President Ronald Reagan and Ambassador of the United States. Abshire graduated from the Military Academy in West Point, New York in 1951. In the Korean War, he was the platoon commander. In 1962, he founded the Center for Strategic and International Studies, which he subsequently headed. From 1970 to 1973 he was Assistant Secretary of State for Legislative Affairs, then First Chairman of International Broadcasting, which he remained until 1977. From 1981, he served for a year as secret service advisor to the US President, then as permanent US ambassador to NATO.
