From 1971 to 1972, he was initially Assistant to US President Richard Nixon for International Economic Affairs. In 1985, together with Stephen A. Schwarzman, he founded the investment company Blackstone Group, of which he was Senior Chairman until 2008. At the same time, he was Chairman of the Board of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York from 2000 to 2004.
