By far the largest private foundation in the world in terms of deposits (ahead of George Soros' Open Society Foundations). In 1994, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates set up his first foundation, the William H. Gates Foundation, which was initially run by his father. In 1999 it was renamed to its current name. It is based in Seattle with approximately 1,376 employees and a foundation capital of 36.7 billion US dollars. Since the foundation, a total of 36.7 billion US dollars in grants have been paid, in 2014 it was 3.9 billion dollars, in 2015 4.2 billion dollars and in June 2017 again 4.6 billion dollars. The grants went to all 50 US states and more than 100 countries.
